COWL SCARVES – MY FAVORITE STYLE
I’ve found that I tend to prefer cowl style scarves more than rectangular ones as they are comfortable to wear, stylish, and do not have ends that stray away from their place. The best time of year to make scarves, in my opinion, is the early fall. Before the days get too chilly, you can prepare yourself some pretty new scarves for the upcoming cold weather. It’s also a great time of year to begin preparing crochet gifts for the Holidays. Here I’ve shared with you three cowl style scarves that I have made, their patterns, and the yarns I used to make them. Each is a simple beginner pattern, especially number three. FAST AND EASY COWL WITH LION BRAND ‘AMAZING’ YARN
My color choice: Glacier Bay
The Fast and Easy Cowl was the first crochet cowl I ever made for myself. I picked up two balls of Lion Brand’s ‘Amazing’ yarn at the craft store in the color Glacier Bay. The cowl took me several evenings to complete, but it was well worth the effort.
FAST AND EASY COWL PATTERN – LINK AND REVIEW
The Fast and Easy Cowl is just that: fast and easy. I agree with the assessment that it is a beginner pattern as it is a simple repetition of single crochet stitches after the initial chain. The scarf can be finished off in two ways: slip-stitched or sewn. I prefer to slip stitch my cowls so that each stitch is lined up and the edges are even. My scarf measures 30 inches in circumference as opposed to the 26 inches in the pattern. I assume this to be due to me wearing it so much the past two winters. Over all, I love this scarf. It is a comfortable length, and the ribbing really adds to its chic character. I highly recommend this pattern. ‘AMAZING’ YARN BY LION BRAND – LINK AND REVIEW
‘Amazing’ yarn by Lion Brand is truly beautiful yarn. It is worsted weight (category 4), and is a wool and acrylic blend. It’s soft and warm, although the wool can make it a little scratchy at times. The yarn itself is very high quality and feels so light and airy as one crochets with it. The colors are vibrant and beautiful. I chose Glacier Bay because I liked the interplay of the raspberry and blues. It also has some greens and reds that blend nicely. I have used the scarf for two winters, and it is still in great condition. I highly recommend this yarn. Lion Brand Yarn 825-208 Amazing Yarn, Glacier Bay – 
MOCK RIB CROCHET COWL WITH LION BRAND ‘HEARTLAND’ YARN
Color: Hot Springs
The Mock Rib Crochet Cowl came about through a most exciting circumstance. I entered and won a bunch of yarn from Lion Brand in a Facebook giveaway. It was pretty cool! One of the yarns was a brand new style for the 2013 Fall season called ‘Heartland’ and was a beautiful purple color called ‘Hot Springs’. As purple just happens to be my favorite color, I was thrilled to have received it. The cowl took me several evenings to complete, but it was well worth the effort.
MOCK RIB CROCHET COWL PATTERN – LINK AND REVIEW
The Mock Rib Crochet Cowl is a very simple pattern and is pretty much the same as the Fast and Easy Cowl pattern. It is a beginner pattern: a simple repetition of single crochet stitches after the initial chain. The scarf can be finished off in two ways: slip-stitched or sewn. I prefer to slip stitch my cowls so that each stitch is lined up and the edges are even. My scarf measured 24 inches as in the pattern when made, but it has stretched some with wearing. I really like this scarf. I’ve worn it quite a bit this fall and winter. It’s very soft and warm, as well as being very comfortable to wear. It is a good circumference as it keeps my neck warm without choking me. I love this scarf! I like the ribbed look and the fit. I highly recommend this pattern. ‘HEARTLAND’ YARN BY LION BRAND – LINK AND REVIEW
‘Heartland’ yarn by Lion Brand is a lovely yarn. It is worsted weight (category 4), and is 100% acrylic. The yarn is very high quality and feels ethereal as one crochets with it. The color Hot Springs is rich and inviting. It is not completely solid in color as it has some very dark strands running through it which give it a nice depth. I have been very satisfied with all Lion Brand products thus far, and this yarn is no different. It’s stood up well to frequent use. I like it a lot. I have used two other colors of ‘Heartland’ in a woven cowl and a crochet slouch hat:

QUICK AND SASSY CHAIN SCARF
Color: Jive
I believe it was in an email newsletter from Red Heart yarn that I first saw the Quick and Sassy Chain Scarf pattern. I had made several classic ‘Sashay’ scarves as commissions last winter, but this idea was new to me. It just so happened that my mom had given me a ball of Red Heart Boutique ‘Sashay’ yarn in the color Jive in the early spring. The pattern is extremely easy, so I gave it a try. It probably took about 30 minutes, but I was interrupted a couple of times. I am very happy with how it turned out and how it looks on me.
QUICK AND SASSY CHAIN SCARF PATTERN – LINK AND REVIEW
The Quick and Sassy Chain Scarf is so simple, and yet, the outcome is stunning. It is an early beginner pattern: it is made with only the chain stitch, the first stitch one learns to make. This would make a great first pattern for a wannabe crocheter. The scarf’s ends are tied together and trimmed. You wrap the scarf around your neck as many times as you like and at whatever lengths you prefer. The scarf probably measures 20 feet long in my best guess, as I used the entire ball of yarn. You may choose to make yours shorter, but you would not be able to wrap it as many times or have the same effect. You can use your hands, or do as I did and use a large hook. The outcome is much smoother with the hook. I’ve worn it a number of times and really like it. Quick and Sassy Chain Scarf Pattern – This pattern was written especially for Red Heart Boutique ‘Sashay’ yarn.
‘SASHAY’ YARN BY RED HEART BOUTIQUE – LINK AND REVIEW
‘Sashay’ yarn by Red Heart Boutique is an unusual, but pretty yarn. It is bulky weight (category 6), and is mostly acrylic with a tiny bit of metallic polyester. The yarn is good quality, but I have occasionally found some larger holes in it. Such a defect would not show in this scarf and does not normally show in the other styles, so it is not a big problem. The color Jive is a lovely variegated mix of blues from light to midnight. I’ve found that the yarn is durable in this pattern. One lady for whom I made the classic style scarf wears hers often, and it seems to be in good condition, although I doubt she mistreats it. *My 1st Crochet Lesson* I was in middle school when I first learned to crochet. I was visiting my grandmother for the day and asked her to teach me to crochet. She lovingly showed me the chain stitch, then went away to do some chores. When she came back, I had made a chain at least 20 feet long. I was so proud that I asked if I could keep it. She said “no,” unraveled it, and taught me another stitch and how to turn. It was one of the best days of my life. I will cherish those memories forever.
