What’s better than fun fall crafting? Fun fall crafting with recycled materials, of course! This craft uses two recyclable materials you probably have in your recycle bin: empty drink mix containers and gallon jug lids.
So, what is so great about using recycled materials for crafting? One, they’re free. Two, it keeps them from going to the landfill if they are not recycled.
In this article, I will show you how to make two types of drink mix container crafts: a pumpkin and a Jack-O’-Lantern. They are both simple to make and are great projects for kids (with some adult supervision).
HOW TO MAKE THE PUMPKIN CRAFT
- Prep Time: 10 minutes
- Total Time: 1 hour or more depending on drying time
Materials:
- 1 plastic drink mix container – empty and clean
- 1 gallon jug lid – cleaned
- acrylic paints : orange, yellow, red, white, and green
- paintbrushes of various sizes
- paint tray or plate for your paints
- cup of water to wash your paintbrushes
- paper towels
- 2 green pipe cleaners
- hot glue gun (adult supervision!!!)
Instructions:
- Paint the gallon jug lid white. Let dry.
- Paint the bottom of the drink mix container orange. Before it dries, mix a little red with some orange to make red-orange and a little orange with some yellow to make yellow-orange. Use those to add some subtle striping. Let dry.
- Repeat step two on the container lid. Let dry.
- Make some curly vines with the pipe cleaners by bending and curling them.
- Paint the small cap green. Use two coats if needed. Let dry.
- Screw the container lid back on if you removed it.
- Hot glue the dried green cap onto the middle of the container lid.
- Hot glue the vines by the little cap.
- Enjoy your little recycled drink mix container pumpkin craft!
HOW TO MAKE THE JACK-O’-LANTERN CRAFT
- Prep Time: 10 minutes
- Total Time: 1 hour or less
Materials:
- 1 orange (Gatorade) drink mix container – empty and clean
- 1 gallon jug lid – cleaned
- orange and green acrylic paints
- a regular black sharpie marker
- a large black sharpie marker or black acrylic paint
- paint tray or plate for your paints
- paintbrushes of various sizes
- a cup of water for washing your brushes
- paper towels
- hot glue gun (adult supervision!!!)
Instructions:
- Paint the gallon jug lid white as a primer. It keeps the color of the lid from distorting the green color of the stem. Let dry.
- Paint the white container lid orange. Let dry.
- Draw the Jack-O’-Lantern face on the orange container with the sharpie marker.
- Color or paint it in.
- Screw on the container lid.
- Paint the small cap green. It may require two coats. Let dry.
- Hot glue the cap onto the lid of the container. (adult supervision)
